Who we are
CitySongs is a joint project of the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development, Hallie Q. Brown-Martin Luther King Center, and Rondo Education Center.

How does CitySongs work?

CitySongs is an after-school program for students in grades 4-8.  At CitySongs, we use music and performance to develop confidence, competence, and individual potential in our students.  Through meetings held two days a week and performances throughout the year, the CitySongs program promotes healthy youth development, artistic achievement, and a community celebration of diversity.

There are no auditions and no fees to join; all students willing to work with us are invited!  A music director, a social work/education director, and many volunteers and student interns staff the CitySongs program. We perform 15-20 times a year, and every rehearsal includes educational/homework time, small- and large-group social skill building, and music rehearsal. Our musical repertoire is diverse, and we include discussions about erasing prejudice and racism, social skills, goal setting, conflict resolution, stereotypes, anger/stress management, community service, and peer pressure.

How do I refer a student?

Please refer students who like to sing and dance; and/or are in need of additional positive support; and/or would benefit from a fun, strength- based after school program. Our staff is always available to answer any questions you may have. For referrals contact:
