CitySongs is a unique prevention program for inner-city kids, vigorously building on their interests and aspirations (e.g., enthusiasm for singing and performing) rather than directing attention toward their problems (e.g., avoiding delinquency and dropout). CitySongs looks simply like a youth choir; the group meets twice weekly after school and gives 20 performances annually. However, the program goes far beyond this first impression. With staff who have expertise in music and social work/education, CitySongs helps young people make ongoing progress in the three goal areas:
The lessons kids learn through singing and through learning to sing well, together, support success in social life in the community, in school, and in adulthood.
